Barry Douglas could swap Leeds for Brescia

Leeds United defender Barry Douglas could be set to join former Whites owner Massimo Cellino at Brescia, according to a fresh transfer report.

The Lowdown: Douglas set to leave Leeds

The 31-year-old spent last season on loan at Championship side Blackburn Rovers, making 30 appearances in the division and registering two assists.

Despite Leeds potentially being light on left-backs amid the projected exit of Ezgjan Alioski, Douglas will leave Elland Road when his contract expires at the end of this month.

The Latest: Link-up with Cellino rumoured

According to BresciaOggi and Pianeta Serie B [via Sport Witness], the Scot could join Brescia this summer, with negotiations being done in ‘great secrecy’.

It would see Douglas link up with former Leeds villain Cellino, who proved to be a rather unpopular owner during his time at Elland Road.

The Verdict: Interesting next step

It makes perfect sense for Douglas to move on this summer, with Leeds going up a gear as a club and the 31-year-old seemingly no longer at the club’s level.

He should be remembered as a solid servant during the Whites’ stint in the second tier, though, playing 27 times in the Championship back in 2018/19 and also featuring intermittently as they won promotion the following year.

While Serie A feels like it could be too strong for him now, a move to Serie B makes more sense and represents an intriguing choice for the £13,000-per-week defender. What Leeds fans will make of him possibly teaming up with Cellino is another debate.
